Laura Leyden currently holds the position of Senior Manager / Dean in Vanguard University. Laura began her Vanguard career in 1993 in the Retail Investor Group and then moved into the Institutional Investor Group (IIG), where she spent almost 10 years. In IIG, Laura supported the sales process as well as led an organization focused on developing communication programs for retirement plan clients. Laura rotated into the organizations Human Resources Group in 2005, and is currently focused on ensuring alignment of learning to key business objectives for several Vanguard divisions. She has a team of instructional design experts that produce and maintain learning programs. Laura received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Business Administration from Saint Joseph's University.
Session Two: How Word of Mouth Became a Corporate Learning Strategy and How to Brand a Corporate University to Internal Business Units:
Shared during this presentation will the building of Janney University a now four year old effort and phased approach which initially faced both limited resources and degrees of audience receptivity. It will highlight how the student experience has been critical in achieving the firm’s overall learning strategies and a grass roots approach to creating pockets of internal strategic champions which generated excitement about learning and professional development. Also included will be key findings and decisions around end user experience, designing to business outcomes, the art of facilitation, and how to brand a corporate university to both willing and sometimes unwilling internal business units.

Tess Kristensen joined Janney Montgomery Scott LLC in January of 2005 as the VP and Director of Learning. As the chief learning officer, she currently leads the strategic vision of education for the organization under a corporate university model. Her role has responsibility for designing, developing and delivering of enterprise wide learning programs and conferences that have a direct impact on business results as various regulatory education programs.
Prior to Janney Montgomery Scott LLC, Tess led the corporate university function at Raymond James, a large regional broker-dealer based in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Tess is Series 6 and 7 licensed by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and also holds the Accredited Wealth Management Advisorsm designation as well as a certificate in Wealth Management from the Wharton School.
She received her B.S. in Arts Administration an, M.B.A. in International Business from the University of Tampa and a M.Ed in Educational Technology and Leadership from George Washington University.
Tess also sits on the Board of Directors of Metropolitan Career Center, a workforce development organization based in Philadelphia where she chairs the education Program Committee.
Panel Session: Current Learning and Training Initiatives, Delivery Methods, including E-Learning Programs
While the content of learning programs can differ greatly by topic and audience, there are also several common aspects of learning programs. In 2009 these include 24X7 (any time) learning, cross boarder (any where) learning, scalable solutions, and rapid courseware (just-in-time) development. During this discussion we will look at how leaders of training in the pharmaceutical, legal and consulting industries address such challenges and deploy effective solutions.

Scott Newman is the firm-wide Director of Training for the multi-national law firm named Dechert LLP. He manages technology-related education for 2200+ Attorneys and staff in 18 offices, world-wide. Scott uses emerging technologies (video, webinars, and multimedia) to enhance existing business practices, while assessing the value and cost effectiveness of new and existing programs.
Scott received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a certificate for Environmental Sciences from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA and his Master of Science in Technology Management from the University of Maryland at College Park, MD. His thesis was on the uses of Telecommunications in Distance Education. He has completed advanced coursework in statistical analysis at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education and is certified in Distance Learning Instruction.
Scott’s background includes positions as: General Manager of Echo Data Services; Research Associate at the Medical College of Pennsylvania; Programmer Analyst and Consultant for the US House of Representatives; Project Manager, Program Administrator, and Senior Systems Analyst for CSR, Inc.; Senior Team Leader at DuPont Pharmaceuticals; Technology Education Manager for Morgan, Lewis, & Bockius LLP; and Director of Training for Dechert LLP. During his career, he established the DuPont Technology Education Center and has contributed significantly to the acquisition and management of over $40 million in federal grants. Notably, he pioneered placing the research database (ETOH) on the web for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. In addition, Scott regularly produces multimedia and recently submitted a one-hour, Continuing Legal Education (CLE) video to the NY Bar Association.
Scott has presented his work at the Masie TechLearn Conference, International Teleconferencing Association annual meeting, Pennsylvania Distance Learning Association, and published in The Distance Learning Journal. He is a member of the American Society of Training and Development, American Legal Training Association, and the eLearning Guild. Helene Geiger
Helene Geiger is the Founder and CEO of Prometheus Training Corporation which has offices in Rochester, N.Y. and Lansdale, PA. The firm was founded in 1982 and currently provides full-service instructional design and development of e-learning solutions for a worldwide client base. This also includes the design of courseware using Rapid E-Learning technologies and effectively transitioning clients from traditional classroom deliveries to online training. Recent projects have included user training and certification for accessing electronic medical records, compliance training certification programs and employee training modules on safety, food handling and sanitation standards in the U.S. grocery industry.
Helene holds a B.A. in Education from Rider University and a M.S. in Instructional Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology as well as advanced coursework in Interactive Media Design. She has also presented on the topics of Making E-Learning Interactive (Niagara Falls ASTD, 2008) and Overcoming Common E-Learning Quandaries (Philadelphia Articulate Users Conference, 2008) and is a recipient of Gold Medal, Articulate Guru Award Competition, 2007 and most recently a guest judge for the same competition in 2009. Lynn DiBonaventura
Lynn has been with Shire Pharmaceuticals since October of 2007. As Associate Director with Shire Sales Training team, Lynn oversees and participates in the strategy, instructional design, development, delivery and analysis of training programs for Shire Renal business. Her internal customers include The Executive Leadership Team, project sponsors, sales managers and staff where she provides expertise in organizational development, adult learning principles and facilitation.
Lynn earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Advertising from Penn State University’s College of Communications. While at Penn State, she was involved in the International Club and Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Lynn is also a graduate of the Global Communications Degree Program at Manchester University in Manchester, England.
Lynn is a Langevin Institute Certified Performance Consultant. She is an expert in Adult Learning Principles and Instructional Design, and is Achieve Global Certified in Sales & Customer Service, Leadership and Sales Coaching. Lynn holds certifications in The Predictive Index Recruitment Model and has completed training in various behavioral team building models.
She is an active member of the American Society of Training and Development, the National Career Development Network, Healthcare Business Women’s Association, National Association of Professional Women and the Society of Biotech and Pharmaceutical Trainers.
Prior to joining Shire, Lynn most recently served as Vice President and Training Manager at a local financial institution after working for several years with AstraZeneca where she served as a Sales Representative, Training Specialist, District Manager and Training Manager in the oncology and cardiovascular business units. Her performance as a specialty sales representative ranked within the Top Ten for three consecutive years before her promotion into the Training Department.
